I've posted all the comic orders I had for this week, so those of you who ordered Combat Colin No.4 should have them tomorrow (or Saturday if the first class post is as slow as it sometimes is). For some it was their very first convention, so I'm pleased it gave them a good impression.

It was a very colourful event, with numerous cosplayers and props from film and TV on display, and everyone I spoke to was enjoying the weekend. Indeed, the atmosphere of the whole show was upbeat anyway.ĭalek invasion! With actor Cara Theobold and Gladiator Wolf in the background. It had a nice balance of actors and artists, and we were all treated equally, and positioned in the same area. This helped to give a good, positive vibe to the whole weekend. Multi-media events can sometimes give priority to the actors with comic guests shunted to a side hall (or, in one show I attended a few years ago, put in the foyer where visitors walked past us). It's not easy to run an event but they did a fantastic job. Organiser Mark Dean and his team worked hard all weekend to make sure all the guests were looked after and everything ran smoothly. The venue was the Norfolk Showground Arena, which was a 15 to 20 minute taxi ride from Norwich but a very good venue to hold a convention. I think this was the 9th year for the show, but it was the first time I've attended, and the first time I'd even been to Norwich. Advisory BoardĬharles M.Trying a new comic con is always a bit of a gamble, especially one that takes a few hours to get to, but any doubts I might have had were soon put aside when Nor-Con proved to be a very pleasant conclusion to my run of cons this year. In addition, our work has been recognized with prizes and honors by numerous journalism organizations, including the Society for Environmental Journalists, the Association of Heath Care Journalists, the National Association of Science Writers, and the Online News Association.

Among these are the 2018 George Polk Award for Environmental Journalism the 2019 Al Neuharth Innovation in Investigative Journalism Award the 2017 Endocrine Society Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism  and the 2018 NIHCM Digital Media Award. The journalism produced by Undark and its contributors has also been honored with numerous awards. Undark’s journalism has been anthologized in the “ Best American Science and Nature Writing” book series, and our work is routinely republished by some of the world’s most respected media outlets, including The Atlantic, Scientific American, Smithsonian, Time, Newsweek, NPR, Quartz, Salon, and Slate. Undark is not interested in “science communication” or related euphemisms, but in true journalistic coverage of the sciences. Undark will therefore aim to explore science in both light and shadow, and to bring that exploration to a broad, international audience. As journalists, we recognize that science can often be politically, economically and ethically fraught, even as it captures the imagination and showcases the astonishing scope of human endeavor. We appropriate the name as a signal to readers that our magazine will explore science not just as a “gee-whiz” phenomenon, but as a frequently wondrous, sometimes contentious, and occasionally troubling byproduct of human culture.Īs such, the intersection of science and society - the place where science is articulated in our politics and our economics or where it is made potent and real in our everyday lives - is a fundamental part of our mission at Undark. The name Undark arises from a murky, century-old mingling of science and commerce - one that resulted in a radium-based industrial and consumer product, called Undark, that was both awe-inspiring and, as scientists would only later prove, toxic and deadly.
